YOUR GUIDE Dan Christopher's Fishing Reports.

If you want to catch some nice fish and also have a good time on the water then I am the Guide for you. Check out my reasonable rates and clients comments and give me a call is you have any questions. My 30 years of experience fishing Salmon Steelhead and Sturgeon in Northwest Oregon is what sets me apart from some of the new guides out there that work jobs during the week and guide on some weekends. Guiding is my full time job, its all I do. This time on the water equals more fish in the boat for you.

5/8/08 Sturgeon report

It just doent get any better then it is right now. We boated 9 keeper sturgeon and an oversized sturgeon by 8:00 a.m. this morning. Its just keeper, keeper, keeper, keeper, and some really big keepers at that. We have limited out every sturgeon trip for almost a month now. Lets make it two months!!!

The water is dropping in the small steams so the salmon bite sould really turn on by next week.

5/1/08 sturgeon report

Another great day, another limit of 6 keeper sturgeon. Sturgeon fishing has been just as great as the spring salmon run this year. We still got another couple moths of both before we move on to summer salmon and steelhead and oversized sturgeon.

4/15/08 salmon report

Still great salmon fishing with limits most days. Forcasted for the Columbia to close April 20th. We will move into the Sandy after that.

4/6/08 fishing report

Today I took my 2 sons out salmon fishing. They are 10 and 20 years old and turning into fine fishermen. We hooked 4 landing 3 nice Chinook in 2 hours. Yesterdays day crew hooked 5 fish, and the evening crew hooked 3.

4/4/08 Fishing Report

Salmon fishing is still really hot and will be for through April. Yesterday we hooked 6 Chinook salmon by 10:30. Today the day crew hooked 7 and the evening crew hooked 3. The run will build and get better through April so its going to be a great season.

3/28/08 Fishing Report

Hello all.

There are not many seats left for spring Chinook in April as this years run forcast and the early season salmon fishing has been terrific. By next week the fishing should be off the hook fantastic. We are having an 84% hatchery fish catch rate so far and that is very nice. I have a couple salmon dates left in April and  some sturgeon dates open the last week in April. Also some Sturgeon dates in May so get them while they last.

2/18/08 Fishing report

Steelhead fishing has been very good. I finally got a day of with todays heavy winds that I now have time to post a report and get some web work done. They set the spring salmon season last week so dates are filling fast. If you want on an April salmon boat you better call quick. Heck I am already half full for summer Chinook.

1/16/08 Fishing Report

Another good day today. Ended up with 6 fish including a big 16 pounder and a whopping 22 pounder released. The cool thing is we got the 22 pounder on video so we will have that along with some other nice fish running at the sportsman show booth.

12/31/07 Fishing Report

4 fish in 4 hours today. Good end to the year.

12/12/07 Fishing Report

Sorry its been so long without a report, I have been super busy finishing salmon season and straight into a sturgeon season. Both seaons were not the best we have ever seen but both were very productive none the less. Now next year should be red hot with the forcasted run prodiction they are giving us. Very very exciting.

Here is a copy of our quarterly news letter that will file you in on what's next.

So how is everyone doing so far this winter, ready for the holidays?  We are all doing great here and I cant wait for Christmas myself, mainly because that will be the start to my favorite season of the year, winter Steelhead. I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas. Mom can I pleasseee go fishing. ; )

Man I think this is a record December for gift certificates. You guys must be planting the seeds to your better half's and having them call and buy gift certificates from me for Christmas. Smart move guys. If you need a gift certificate just email or call me. They are good for 1 year so get it now and plan the trip later.

There is also some new sportsman show news, I will again be at the portland sportsman's show this year, but I will be in the south building this year instead the north. My new space is in the middle of the south building space #1137. The dates are February 6th-10th, come by and say hi.

Well we are coming off a pretty good fall season.  Not as good as it should have been but not to bad at all.  For some reason the fall run all over the state was half of what we are used to seeing and smaller fish. The slower season shocked us all but the catch count was still good so we cant complain much. The fall sturgeon season was slow for a couple weeks but boy it heated up nice with limits by 11:00 most days. The great salmon news of 2007 is it was a record jack salmon year, For those of you that don't know a jack is a immature salmon. A salmon that should come back the following year but for some reason didn't. They use this years jack counts to predict next years adult run size.  This is where the good news is. they are predicted record salmon runs in 2008. I will talk more about that and what it means below with the salmon stuff.

So lets move on to what coming up in the next 4 months.

Winter Steelhead December, January, February, March, Many of you already know that I am a big winter Steelhead fan. It is my favorite fish and favorite way to catch fish. A relaxing day side drifting the Sandy river to me is heaven on earth. Some people wouldn't think of fishing in the winter,  like many others I think it is the best time to fish. No pressure, less people, and great fish. It really doesn't rain that much, maybe 1 in 4 trips. Dress warm and your golden. If you have never been Side drifting for winter Steelhead you owe it to yourself to try it once. If your worried about the cold, book your trip for latter when it warms up mid February early March. I myself will be out there every day I can with clients, and with friends, after all I only get 3 months of winter Steelhead before I have to wait 9 months to winter Steelhead fish again. The new light action G-Loomis rods and Okuma reels are standing by and ready for action.

KEEPER STURGEON March April, May
Are you ready for some great keeper Sturgeon fishing?  It should be a great spring as the forecast is for them to pull the gill nets off the river early February leaving more fish for us. We get started heavy fishing keeper Sturgeon around mid March. The keeper season is now open on Thursday's, Friday's, Saturday's only starting January 1st. As always these dates fill fast so give me a call if your interested in some spring sturgeon and we will get you on the books so you don't miss out. As always the best fishing will be during the week with hungrier fish and less crowds.

Spring Chinook  March, April, As I touched on above they are predicting the 2nd best spring salmon run sense 1980. The summer and fall runs are also predicted to be record runs. What that means is we are fore-casted to be able to fish below Bonneville dam this year for spring Chinook. Many of you that fished with me 3 and 4 years ago up there in the spring back bouncing eggs know how much fun and how many fish there are. They call it a slaughter on the water, and thats why they shut us down up there the last few years. The season is not set yet and we are not sure if we will get 7 days a week, or just Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but when they tell us in February the season will fill up very very fast. If you want to beat everyone to the bookings I would book starting the last week in March, through mid April first, on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. Those 3 days for those 3 weeks should surly be open, and you can grab one of those 9 dates before the crowd. If for some reason they don't follow history and they open other dates we can switch your dates if needed but at least you got a date. Just maybe in February they give us 7 days a week and we stay open through June. We can hope. Either way, this will be the going to be the best spring salmon season in the last 3 years when we were last allowed to fish the upper Columbia. The Willamette is also fore casted to be open 7 days a week so there will be spring salmon available every day. Thanks again for your business and I am looking forward to fishing with you again soon. Have fun with the rest of your winter and be safe out there.

God bless and keep a tight line,

9/21/07 Fishing report

Today we hooked 26 Chinook/King salmon landing 19. We have hooked more then 20 most of the week. Fun stuff.  Don't miss out on this better then most of Alaska style fishing.

9/1/08 Fishing report

Today kicked off the start of out fall Chinook season. This season peeks the last week in September and runs through October. This is the largest salmon run we get and fishing is awesome. I wont have time to post reports much as I will be working 12 hour days most days. If you want to see if I have an opening for you please give me a call. If I don't have room I will find you a good boat that does. I do this because I hate seeing people doing the Russian rulet phone book or internet search, not knowing if you are getting the lazy drunk guide service deal. There are way to may people getting burned out here with some of our less then professional none fish catching guides. don't let that be one of you. Please let me help make sure your trip if fun and full of fish.

7/23/07 Fishing report

Fishing is hot right now and should be for at least a few weeks. Today we hooked 8 fish landing 6 of the 8 by 9:00 a.m. 2 Chinook salmon and 4 hatchery steelhead. 2 fish an hour is great fishing.

7/11/07 Fishing report

Today we kicked off our steelhead season with 6 fish hooked in the first 4 hours of fishing. Look out steelhead season here we come.

7/10/07 Fishing report

Hooked and landed 6 oversized sturgeon today. Its been a great oversized sturgeon season. We are averaging 4.5 oversized a day. Our best day was 7 and we only had one day with less then 2 oversized hooked. We will be fishing for these beasts for another month so get out there if your interested.

7/4/07 Fishing report

Fished four hours today before the fireworks show. Hooked 6 Chinook in that short time frame and sent 4 clients home very happy to their family BBQ's.

6/29/07 Fishing report

Here is another group of happy customers and the fish that didn't get away.

6/19/07 Fishing report

Here are a couple of nice Chinook part of my group on the 19th caught. Sorry I didn't get the picture of the other couples fish.

4/29/07 Fishing report

What a great start to the Sturgeon season. Fishing has been HOT! We are getting limits most days and some monster 9 and 10 footers already as well. Salmon fishing has been great for this time of year and the best is yet to come as both Sturgeon and spring salmon fishing is best in May and June in are area.

3/28/07 Fishing report

We are winding down our winter steelheading but the summer run is just getting started and will fish well through April. Sturgeon will also get going good by the middle of April. We did our first spring salmon trip of the year (pictures below) a couple weeks ago, not bad for the first trip. The springer run will stay slow for a week or so and take off by mid April with May and June being very good. I will try and get everyone another report in mid April.

3/1/07 Fishing Report

What a great steelhead year so far. We boated 11 steelhead today. It is turning out to be a much better year then most. Our catch numbers are down on hatchery fish but the wild fish numbers are up. Its running about 60%-40%. When the winter run end the summer run will be in so we will have steelhead for the next couple months. Most people were struggling with all the sand in the river this year but personally I loved it. It makes the crowds leave and the fish bunch up.

1/31/07 Fishing Report

What a great January. Our worst day we hooked 3 steelhead our best day we hooked 13. We averaged 6.1 steelhead per trip and that is a great number for a January. The peek of the Steelhead run is now in February and March so we are really looking forward to the next couple months.

1/19/07 Fishing Report

What a great year so far. We hooked 36 steelhead in the last 4 trips and thats a great number for January being that the peek of the run doesn't take place tell almost March. Here is a couple pictures of the last week.

12/1/06 Fishing Report

Rain rain rain. To much rain. The rivers have been out for about 3 weeks causing us to miss fishing most of November. I always take December off but will be back fishing and posting reports in January.

10/3/06 Fishing Report

Wow, 3 weeks an no report. Busy, busy. This is my first day off in 3 weeks. Everyone wanted in on the hot action I predicted. Well it was hot and it will stay hot for some time. Yesterday we hooked 21 Chinook and landed 16. Thats about average for the last couple weeks. Great days we would boat over 25 Chinook, and slow days around 12. This Chinook salmon fishery will last through October if you want in on some of the fun.

Thursday Oct 5th is the opener for Keeper Sturgeon on The Columbia river. Trust me when I say there is a lot of them boys in the river right now. Sturgeon will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and we will be doing sturgeon, and salmon through October.

The end of October I will start targeting Chinook in and around Tillamook Oregon as well as the Columbia river out of Portland Oregon.

Sure feels weird not fishing today. I did get some boat maintanace done though.

9/9/06 Fishing Report

If you cant tell I have been very busy and haven't had time to update this area much. Chinook salmon are in and biting well. We have had at least one double on each of the last 3 trips. The salmon run will get even better in the weeks to come and be good though October. I will give you the run down on the last few trips. On 9/5 we boated 4 fish, lost 2 or 3 more. On 9/8 we boated our 3 fish in an hour and a half, Today 9/9 we limited the first crew with 4 fish to the boat and we were done a couple hours early, tonight I have an evening crew and we hooked 6 landing 4 for a limit in about 3 hours.

I will be working  day and evening trips for the next few days before i am back to just day trips for awhile, so i will try and post another report by the end of the week. If you want to hook some big Chinook now is the time. They will be here for another month. My day trips are almost full but I have plenty of half day evening trips. Don't worry about the evening and only getting 4 hours, the fish per hour rate is always better in the evening.

There are plenty of fish to be caught. More that most guides catch in 2 or 3 full day trips easy. 25 Chinook days, 15 Chinook nights. Did I say that? Yep, the peek is the end of September and doubles and triple are an every day thing.

This is our month. In this fishery we are top dog. There is only one other guide that compairs with our numbers. They rest are way behind. If i am full he is the only one I send people to. I really try not to send people to the 2 fish day guys.

So Book that trip. Get on my boat while there are dates open. I am telling you, you will be kicking your self if your on another boat watching us land fish after fish all day.

Take care people, I am off to bed.

8/2,3,4/06 Fishing reports

Here is quick report before I head back out to the river. We hooked 26 Chinook salmon and summer steelhead in the last 3 days boating 18 nice fish. It is running about 80% steelhead and 20% Chinook on these trips. The steelhead numbers should climb over the next week or so and then start shifting back to allot more Chinook in the catch. Give me a call if you want to get in on some of this action.

7/22/06 Fishing report

Fishing is great. Well for most fish. Keeper Sturgeon fishing is slow. Oversized Sturgeon fishing is good and will get great August 1st when the deadline moves up. Summer Chinook and steelhead fishing had been great. We have been getting between 7 and 10 hook ups most days. The slowest day was 4, the best 13. We are starting to see some heavy Chinook as well. Today we landed a couple wild steelhead, a couple hatchery steelhead, a 24 pound , 33 pound and 39 pound Chinook. We also lost a couple Chinook.

Here is a picture of todays finish.

7/18/06 Fishing report

Here is todays catch. Not counting released wild fish.

7/7/06 Fishing report

Its been a very busy month for us. Sturgeon fishing has been great as always. The Salmon and Steelhead fishing is heating up quit nice as well. Today we limited out with 4 Chinook and 2 Steelhead to the boat in the first 2 hours. Salmon will be caught through October on the Columbia river and the steelhead action will peek the end of July, first week of August. This time frame can be some of the best fishing we have in Oregon. Hooking over 10 fish per day is pretty common. The last part of July and the first part of August is great, and a great warm up for the fall Chinook season to come. September is prime Chinook month on the Columbia river. The last week in September is the peek time. The last 7 days of September last year we brought 147 Chinook to the boat. 25 to 30 fish days will have to wait tell September, but for now we  will get to play with the good days of 10 to 15 fish and some hot steelhead action. I know, like 10 fish is a slow day right? Open fishing days are filling up fast. I still have some openings, but if you are flexable, and want peek season dates you better get to calling quick. Peek fishing dates fill up fast, and if you want to get in on the Alaska type fishing we get in September for an Oregon price you will have to set up your trip well in advance. September is our busiest month of the year. The great news is this year I will also be running some evening half day trips after my day trips are done. This way I can get more clients out for great fishing and they don't have to get the time off work to do it. I have a busy month ahead, but I will try and get you another fresh report in a week or so.

Todays finish.

5/28/06 Fishing report

The shad and Oversized Sturgeon are here in good numbers. This is an action packed fishery for all ages. We normally start off the day fishing for shad to use as fresh bait for the Sturgeon. These are 2 to 4 pound shad and fight really well. We spend about an hour fishing for the shad unless people want to stay longer, but in this hour we have about 30 fish in the box and are ready to tackle the monster sturgeon. Most oversized sturgeon run from 7 to 12 feet long and take about 45 minutes to land. This year most are running 8 to 9 feet long. How many oversize sturgeon we catch in a day varies but usually runs 4 or 5. We have also been picking up some keeper sturgeon 42 to 60 inch which we are allowed to keep on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays. This fishery has started off great and customers looking for allot of action and hooking the fish of a life time are going home with smiles on there faces. This fishery will last well through June.

Spring Salmon fishing is picking nicely. It hasn't been as good of fishing as the last couple record run size years but it is worth the trip. We are averaging about 1.3 Chinook per rod at this time. The Columbia river reopened for Chinook so we have a couple options as to what river we fish. In June we will still have spring Chinook coming in but we will also start seeing the summer Chinook (June Hogs) show up.

Here is a cool Oversized sturgeon video one of my guys took. Just click the word Sturgeon below.

Sturgeon Video

5/1/06 Fishing report

Keeper Sturgeon fishing is off the hook right now and should stay this way through June. I predicted it to get white hot by May and it did for sure. This is the best keeper fishing of the year and limits early in the morning have been the norm. Unlike some other guides we don't quit when we have limited out on keepers. You pay for 8 hours you get 8 hours. After limiting on keepers we stay fishing and play catch and release for the rest of your time.

Spring Chinook Salmon fishing in the Sandy is off to a good start. By the end of this week I expect it to be going strong though June.

4/14/06 Fishing report

I am mainly fishing on the Willamette, Sandy and Clackamas rivers, for Spring Chinook Salmon right now. The Columbia river closed to fishing for Spring Chinook this week but there is plenty of better spots still open to us.The Spring salmon are some of the best eating Salmon that you will ever sink your teeth into, and they will vary in size from 10 to 40 pounds. You will have a lot of fun catching these beautiful salmon that are fresh from the ocean. Be sure and book your trip up early in the year to get the day you want. To me Chinook are far more fun to catch is shallow water with light tackle, thats why I like fishing in the tributaries in May and June. The small tributaries are predicted to have another nice healthy run of Chinook this year and with that fishery is only 2 weeks away I cant wait, can you?

I am also fishing for keeper Sturgeon April thru June on the Columbia river out of Portland. Fishing has been good and should get white hot by the first of May.

If you're looking for a fun vacation and want to catch and take home some nice Fish, then give me a call, and make your fishing dreams come true. Be sure and check out my New Fishing Calendar for the best months to fish.
